James 5:19-20 (NIV) 19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back,20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
James 5:19-20 (MSG) 19-20 My dear friends, if you know people who have wandered off from God’s truth, don’t write them off. Go after them. Get them back and you will have rescued precious lives from destruction and prevented an epidemic of wandering away from God.
We are all called to lead others to Jesus. But did you realize that we are also called to encourage and draw back in those who have known the Lord and for whatever reason have left the church?
I’m sure I have read this passage many times but for some reason today it really hit me that we (I) have a responsibility to get people back who have wandered away from God. You can argue that just because someone is not going to church that doesn’t mean they have left God. I would agree but anyone “out there” without support is going to have a much harder time staying strong in the Lord. We need each other.
If you know someone that has “wandered away from God” contact them, encourage them, pray for (and with them if they will let you) and do whatever you can to get them back. Don’t focus on getting them into your church but getting them back to God and back into a church.
It’s our job to love them back.
