Living in the light

1 John 2:7-14 (NLT)

7 Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment for you; rather it is an old one you have had from the very beginning. This old commandment—to love one another—is the same message you heard before. 8 Yet it is also new. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment, and you also are living it. For the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining.

9 If anyone claims, “I am living in the light,” but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is still living in darkness.10 Anyone who loves another brother or sister is living in the light and does not cause others to stumble. 11 But anyone who hates another brother or sister is still living and walking in darkness. Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded by the darkness.

12 I am writing to you who are God’s children
because your sins have been forgiven through Jesus.
13 I am writing to you who are mature in the faith
because you know Christ, who existed from the beginning.
I am writing to you who are young in the faith
because you have won your battle with the evil one.
14 I have written to you who are God’s children
because you know the Father.
I have written to you who are mature in the faith
because you know Christ, who existed from the beginning.
I have written to you who are young in the faith
because you are strong.
God’s word lives in your hearts,
and you have won your battle with the evil one.

The other day I heard three different conversations discussing how people who claim to be Christians act badly.  In other words these people being discussed are saying, “I am living in the light,” but hate a Christian brother or sister, that person is still living in darkness.”v.9  Jesus told us to “love one another”.

We need to “walk in the light” and show His love daily.  This is easy to say but hard to do.  Most of the time we have to do this by faith.  We don’t necessarily feel love toward others but, what we have to remember is that we aren’t called to do what we “feel”.  Jesus told us to love but He didn’t say love because you feel like loving.

People are watching us all the time.  Usually they are waiting to see us who claim to be Christians act badly and unlovingly.  This is harsh but it is also true.  We have to remember this and do our best to act in the manner that is pleasing to the Lord.  Now this doesn’t mean you need to be fake and sugary, be yourself but treat people the way you want to be treated.  Jesus said in Luke 10:27  “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.”

We have a responsibility to do our best to always follow His commands.  If we fail we should repent and do what we can to repair the harm we have done.  This might mean apologizing or making right when we have been unloving to another person.  But sometimes we can’t fix or undo what we have done wrong so we need to try to always act in a loving manner toward others.

Remember “walk in the light” keep what Jesus commanded in mind as you go through your day.  Love one another.  We can do this, He loves us and gives us the Holy Spirit to help us!
